The Church of St. George is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Lalibela, Ethiopia. It is one of the 11 rock-hewn churches in Lalibela and is the most iconic and well-known among them. The church was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela, who is believed to have constructed the 11 churches in the area. The Church of St. George is carved out of a single block of red volcanic rock and is shaped like a cross. It is located in a deep trench that is 12 meters below ground level, which adds to its unique architectural design. The church is accessed by descending a steep set of stairs that lead down to the trench. The interior of the church is adorned with colorful frescoes and paintings that depict biblical scenes and stories. The most prominent feature of the church is its cross-shaped central pillar, which is said to represent the cross upon which Jesus was crucified. The pillar is surrounded by a circular walkway and four smaller pillars, which symbolize the four evangelists. The Church of St. George is still an active place of worship and is visited by thousands of pilgrims each year. It is considered to be one of the most important and sacred sites in Ethiopia and is a testament to the country's rich cultural heritage and religious traditions.
